Transplant Day

After officially being placed on the UNOS list for just 22 days, Will received a call at 14:08 on June 7th from the transplant team notifying us an offer was accepted. Coincidentally my grandparents 92nd wedding anniversary sewing in a cosmic tie. We made contact back home, grabbed the go bag, and took one last trip through Forest Park to ground ourselves in mental solitude.

Give.

Offer something you have so others may benefit. Give for those without the means of survival. Give for those without a voice. Give especially when that voice rings loud with the courage to ask for help. Give so a son can enjoy a different life, a long one, filled with possibility, a career, love that is either won or lost, fatherhood. I dream those for him but am willing to support his personal pursuits.

Give to crack open the egg of hope for a fellow CFer, a sibling, this family immediate and extended, the random stranger that offered their love one to save another.

A few hours from now, after a journey of years and one endless night, I will give my son to the best team in the nation as he undergoes a double lung transplant. Late in the evening, they will give him back to me better than ever. And I will wait for him to explain the true meaning of breathing.

Thus goes the cycle of organ donation. Give when the time is right. Accept the chance at a new life.

Where there’s a Will….Love ya pal
